IS SELF-REGULATION A LEGITIMATE APPROACH TO PROTECTING COPYRIGHT ON THE INTERNET?
The online debate 'Copyright in the digital age', hosted by the online
publication spiked and sponsored by the European Commission research project RightsWatch, continues.
In the latest expert responses to the debate:
 - NORMAN LEWIS, director of technology research at Freeserve.com plc, says the debate should be reposed, to clarify what is meant by self-regulation.
 - MARK ISHERWOOD, director and co-founder of Rightscom Ltd, calls for regulation that takes into account 'the inadequacy of the court system and the greater stakeholder interest of the citizen'.
 - GREGOR CLAUDE, researcher at the Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths College, accuses cultural industries of 'disabling the internet's potential for creating and disseminating knowledge'.
The debate can be found at:
http://www.spiked-online.com/copyright
Several reader responses have also been published, arguing, among other things, that:
 - 'File sharing is a euphemism for theft'
 - 'Copyright should be a compromise, not an axe'
 - 'Copyright laws operate to steal a human right'

IBA- INTERNATIONAL RULE OF LAW DIRECTORY
With a grant from the United States Institute of Peace, the International Bar Association (IBA) is creating an online world wide directory of organisations providing rule of law assistance. The IBA is the world's largest international organisation of Law Societies, Bar Associations and individual lawyers engaged in international practice. The IBA was founded in 1947. It is composed of over 16.000 individual lawyer members in 183 countries and 178 Law Societies and Bar Associations. The proposed directory will consist of an online database from which the user will be able to access each organisation's website, identify its area of focus, geographical reach and contact details. Only organisations working in the field of the rule of law which fit one or more of the categorieslisted on our directory will be included.
I would be extremely grateful if you could help me by locating organisations working in the field of the rule of law in your country, so that we may contact them and invite them to be included in this directory. I am specifically seeking the names of relevant organisations, their contact details (including e-mail address) and the person to whom I should direct the request. We have prepared an electronic form, which is easy to complete, to be sent to these organisations. If you wish to register your organisation, please click on http://www.roldirectory.org/ and follow the instructions. Please feel free to forward this message to other organisations working in the field of the rule of law. Please note that there are no costs involved in registering your organisation or accessing the information contained in the database.
The IBA considers the primacy of the law as a fundamental principle of any democratic system seeking to foster and promote rights. The IBA believes that an easily accessible, online directory of entities involved in rule of law will be an invaluable tool to those establishing and implementing rule of law programmes. The Directory will provide legal and governmental practitioners with instant access to entities that provide technical assistance in the area of rule of law.
Thank you for your assistance and do not hesitate to contact me with further questions.
Sincerely yours,
Valentina Zoghbi
