The eChallenges e-2004
Conference and Exhibition takes place in Vienna,
Austria, 27 29 October. This is the fourteenth
in a series of Annual Conferences supported by
the European Commission, which regularly
attracts over 500 delegates from commercial,
government and research organisations around the
world.
The International Programme Committee for e-2004
is now inviting extended abstracts (800 - 1,200
words) for technical papers, visionary papers
and business case studies. Proposals to arrange
tutorials or complete sessions are also welcome.

This year's conference themes include eBusiness,
eGovernment, eWork, eEurope 2005 and ICT Take-up
by SMEs, and International Collaboration.
e-2004 will also feature an Exhibition and an
attractive Social Programme for delegates,
speakers exhibitors and partners, to enhance
networking opportunities at the Conference.
e-2004 will provide a forum to showcase the
achievements of FP5, eEurope 2005 and Regional,
National and International ICT related
initiatives, and look forward to the future by
focusing on the thematic priorities of FP6. The
European Research Area (ERA) and research
priorities and trends for the future will also
be discussed.
FINALISTS FOR WORLD SUMMIT AWARDS PUBLISHED
Organizers of the World Summit Awards, an
international competition celebrating creative
digital content products from around the world,
have published the awards finalists on their
website. Over 800 products from more than 130
countries were nominated for the award, which
were reviewed by an international jury in Dubai
last month. For each of the eight categories
(e-learning, e-culture, e-government,
e-entertainment, e-science, e-health, e-business
and e-inclusion), jurors selected five
finalists, totaling 40 projects in all. The
finalists will be showcased at a special event
at the World Summit on the Information Society
in Geneva. Among the projects selected: the
Splendid Chinese Culture portal (http://chiculture.net),
Tropical America (http://www.tropicalamerica.com),
Public Library of Science (http://www.plos.org),
Romania's e-government portal (http://www.e-guvernare.ro),
Living Heritage (http://www.livingheritage.org.nz),
WougNet (http://www.wougnet.org)
and Time to Market (http://www.manobi.net).
Additionally, other nominees will be selected to
participate in a showcase in which digital
content is organized by geographic region.

BROCHURE ON INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTARY SERVICE
This brochure is supported by the large-scale
project promoting long-term voluntary service in
Central & Eastern Europe. It aims to introduce
international voluntary service to the ‘layman’
those who know nothing already of voluntary
service; to show the positive impacts of
international in a creative way; to show the
reality of long-term voluntary service in
Central & Eastern Europe.
CALL FOR BROCHURE DESIGNER
We want: colorful, dynamic, readable brochure
using the following specifications: 32 pages,
full color, A4 or A5 (quote for both sizes), 80g
paper, 120g cover
We have: illustrations, testimonies, photos.
We need you to:
-create the design for the brochure it may have
a recurring figure or cartoon;
-make a draft lay-out of the brochure;
-collaborate with the editorial team of the
brochure 3 persons (travel might be requested)
in making the final lay-out of the brochure
-a complete draft should be available by mid of
June 2003
-the final version should be ready for printing
by end of August 2003

Information Resources (CLIR) announces
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Access to
Learning Award for 2003
Application deadline: February 28, 2003
Given annually to a library, library agency, or
similar organization outside the United States,
the international award recognizes innovation in
providing free public access to information
technology. The award includes a grant up to US
$1 million.
Eligibility and Selection
- What kinds of organizations should apply?
Public libraries, library agencies, or similar
kinds of organizations outside the United States
are invited to apply. Preference will be given
to organizations sponsoring programs that have
not been funded in the past by the foundation.
Organizations inside the United States are not
eligible to apply.
- How is "free public access" defined?
An organization offers free public access if it
allows all members of the public, including
children and young people, to use its facilities
free of charge. Preference will be given to
organizations that reach out to underserved
populations, such as poor or disabled patrons,
- What is considered innovative?
An organization's programs are considered
innovative if they provide access to information
technology and services that were previously
unavailable to the community.
- How is the award recipient selected?
An international advisory committee of
librarians and information technology experts
reviews applications and selects the recipient.
